This is old growth redwood, sequoia sempervirens. This figure is very strong, and the wood is as hard as redwood gets. Its a lot different in that regard than second growth, and the grain is much tighter. I acquired a load of green 8x8 chainsawn blocks of this material a few years ago and milled them mostly for drop tops and archtops, but a few of these carve tops as well. This is easily the best redwood you have ever worked with.
